2017 Toyota Corolla iM

When Toyota sent Scion to the big used-car lot in the sky at the end of 2016, it saved three of the brand’s four models from the crusher and slapped Toyota nameplates on them. Goodbye, Scion iM. Hello, Corolla iM. Toyota’s rebadged compact hatchback excites the eyes and won’t empty the pocketbook. This one-size-fits-all model has standard features such as an aero body kit, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and active safety tech that includes automated emergency braking. That’s where the fun stops. Powering the iM is a listless 137-hp four-cylinder engine that drives the front wheels and makes the Corolla iM a rolling contradiction: Its looks promise far more performance than it can hope to deliver.

 What’s New for 2017?

The Corolla iM is virtually unchanged from the previous Scion iM, other than the badging and a suite of active safety systems called Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C), which includes forward-collision and lane-departure warning.

Trims and Options We’d Choose

The Corolla iM has a single trim that starts at $19,635 with the standard six-speed manual transmission; a continuously variable automatic (CVT) is optional for an extra $740. To squeeze some fun from the hatchback’s asthmatic 137-hp 1.8-liter four-banger, we’d stay with the stick shift and spend our money on two accessories:

• Rear wind deflector ($399)
• TRD lowering springs ($399)

The rear wing improves the iM’s already sporty aesthetics, and the red powder-coated springs hunker it down by an inch—making it look even more like a little road rocket—and lower its center of gravity. We found the lowered car did corner better during our first drive of a 2016 Scion iM fitted with the springs. Inexpensive style is what separates Toyota’s eccentric hatchback from the competition; even with these two affordable accessories, it’ll still only cost you $20,433.
