Celebrating the post-midterm relief of spring break can either be an opportunity to decompress at home or amp up on vacation. Whether students intend to unwind or get wound up this spring break, University Health Services offered advice for surviving the break unscathed at their Safer Spring Break event on March 5.

Safer Spring Break featured free takeaways, including pizza and condoms, along with educational activities, inviting students to engage in their own break wellbeing and actively prevent worst-case scenarios.

“No one wants their spring break adventure to turn into a disaster or tragedy,” said Megan Thompson, a UHS health educator who helped coordinate the event.

University Health Services worked in conjunction with the FSU Police Department, the Healthy Campus 2020 Task Force, Healthy ’Noles, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to provide information on the topics of alcohol consumption, sexual health, body image, DUI-prevention and planning an overall successful spring break.

During peak campus hours, the Union Green was the venue for a myriad of health and safety resources in one convenient location, allowing students to reeducate themselves on matters of safety as they passed through the Union. The timely event is meant to target students preparing for the break, also serving as a reminder to be vigilant, said Thompson.

Students had the opportunity to pose questions to multiple campus experts on issues of health and safety, such as MADD representative Connie Beard. Participating in this safety initiative was of particular importance to Beard, as her son Matthew, an FSU student, was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Beard shared her son’s story and hoped to discourage further drunk driving incidents.

As an additional educational component, students could also answer questions regarding safety to earn tickets at each of the tables, collecting at least five that earned students free pizza.

Safer Spring Break addressed the importance of a healthy body image, specifically with students who were eager hit the gym and get toned for the beach. Alternatively, Thompson also said that if students choose relaxation over more active spring break festivities that students do make the effort to exercise and stay fit.

“We had some great conversations,” Thompson said. “I think that made our initiative a success and I think everyone who came out learned something.”

If the allure of free pizza wasn’t enough to attract college students, the event also was also filled with information about alcohol, specifically its responsible consumption. Thompson said one of the event’s main purposes was to reinforce safe consumption methods, ways to monitor drinking in order to prevent alcohol poisoning and remind students of drinks spiked with date rape drugs. Thompson’s main advice was this:

“Remember to be aware of your surroundings,” she said.

Alcohol safety was a prominent feature of the event and during the event FSUPD Officer Jeremy Izquierdo volunteered his time to field questions from interested students, many posing questions about driving under the influence.

“I think a lot of people were very surprised at some of the answers they heard, like the amount of alcohol it takes to start feeling the effects,” Izquierdo said. “A lot of people were very surprised that it takes as little as it does.”

While the legal limit in .08 blood alcohol content, Izquierdo said the extent of intoxication varies person to person, depending on factors of body size and drinking habits. He stressed that alchol affects everyone differently. If an officer concludes that someone’s normal faculties, their abilities to drive and make sound judgments, are noticeably impaired after blowing a .05 BAC, one can be charged with driving under the influence.

Beyond acting a resource to answer the more technical questions, the presence of FSUPD also allowed students to put a human face on campus law enforcement. Izquierdo said the event functioned as a sort of “meet and greet” for FSUPD and students, allowing both parties to interact in a positive setting.

Izquierdo’s parting advice for spring break safety was concise, yet especially relevant to the college set.

“Use common sense—that’s one of the best things I can say,” said Izquierdo. “Don’t put yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, plain and simple.”

Please clear fly-tipping at the entrance to Carbuncle Passage N17 at the junction with Shelbourne Road. You can see a photo on Flickr. It’s blurred as I took it in the dark without a tripod, but you can see the pile includes a dumped mattress; wood; boxes, and bags.
