Interesting Facts: Mitsubishi Sigma

The Mitsubishi Sigma was a common sight on Australian roads in the 1980’s and the model continues to have a strong following and a proud place in Australia’s car history.

Here’s a few things you might not have known about the Chrysler/Mitsubishi Sigma:

• The Sigma was built in Adelaide from 1977 until 1987.
• It was based on the Mitsubishi Galant and was initially badged ‘Chrysler Sigma’, before Mitsubishi took over Chrysler’s Australian operations.
• In 1980 a base-model Mitsubishi Sigma was priced from around $7,000.
• The Mitsubishi Sigma was offered in sedan and wagon body-styles through its life.
• The Sigma holds the record of being the first Australian production car to be offered with a turbocharger (in 1981 500 versions of the 116kW/235Nm Turbo-Sigma were produced).
• In the early 1980’s a base-model Sigma offered standard features including an AM/FM radio, adjustable steering column and intermittent wipers.
• A two-door coupe version of the Sigma was also offered and known as the Mitsubishi Scorpion.
• The Sigma was the first car offered in Australia with the Mitsubishi ‘Astron’ engine and featured an 83kW 2.6 litre version in the final GN series of the model.
• The Mitsubishi Sigma was replaced by the slightly larger Mitsubishi Magna in 1987.
