RANGE ROVER SV COUPE WILL GET BACK TO ITS TWO-DOOR LUXURY SUV ROOTS

There’s no shortage of body styles in Range Rover’s lineup at the moment — save for one that launched the sub-brand in the first place 48 years ago. A two-door Range Rover has been off the menu for quite some time, but the automaker has not forgotten about it; given the popularity of coupe-styled SUVs, now may be as good a time as any for a comeback.

Range Rover will unveil a two-door SV Coupe at the 2018 Geneva motor show in March, but for now, the company has only shared an image of the interior, lest Land Rover fans think it will be a “cheaper” short-wheelbase model of sorts. This glimpse of the interior proves that it won’t, and given the fact that Land Rover plans to make just 999 of these, it’s safe to say it’ll be priced quite a bit north of the four-door SVAutobiography model. As such, it will be hand-assembled at the SV Technical Centre in Ryton-on-Dunsmore in the U.K.

The Range Rover SV Coupe will also have a distinctive interior bisected by a wood-paneled console, with diamond-quilted white leather seats up front and black leather seats in the back. The interior will feature a number of other custom touches, but the big question is whether it will keep the wheelbase of the standard model or opt for something shorter. Another big question (aside from how easy it will be to get into the back seats) is how much of a Coupe this Range Rover will be. The original model did not bill itself as such; the designation Coupe was not applied to SUVs of the day. We’re hoping for a slabby, no-nonsense roofline rather than something X6-like. We’re also curious to see whether this model will feature any other exterior details that will set it apart from four-door models. For power, we expect to see the 550-hp 5.0-liter V8.

Unveiling this special vehicle at Geneva International Motor Show in March, during Land Rover’s 70th anniversary year, will be a defining moment for Land Rover, the Range Rover portfolio and Special Vehicle Operations.”

We’ll see the Range Rover SV Coupe in the metal at the Geneva motor show in a matter of weeks, but for now, if you’re in the market for a truly rare two-door Land Rover, might we suggest a first-gen two-door Discovery from the early 1990s? They were never sold in the U.S., and they’re not easy to find back home in Europe. Or better yet, an original two-door Rangie — they’re no longer easy to find for a song.
