AutoGuide spied a California Air Resources Board document recently with a little tidbit that we’re all interested in. It looks like — if these docs are to be believed — the 2019 Chevy Camaro SS will come with either a six- or seven-speed manual transmission, along with an eight-speed automatic.
AutoGuide says it’s the seven-speed from the Corvette, but it can’t be exactly: The ‘Vette uses a Tremec TR-6070 transmission, mounted in the rear in a sort of pseudo-transaxle setup, while the Camaro uses a more standard engine-mounted transmission. So the packaging will be different, even if the familiar TR-6070’s guts carry over.
The documents also say the Camaro only has one 6.2-liter engine listed for 2019, which puts the future of the 650-hp ZL1 into question. Our guess, as is AutoGuide’s, is that Chevy is looking to up the mpg on its big ol’ LT1 V8 over its current 16 city/25 highway. A triple overdrive cruising gear would do that.
We emailed Chevy about the docs. The company came back with the standard line of “we can’t comment on future product.” But you can! Have at it below in the comments.
