Simple 4 Ingredient Apple Sundae

apples

Since last year apple sundaes have been a fall-time favorite in our house. And why should pumpkin get all of the attention? Apples are amazing too.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right? And what better way to enjoy an apple than in this simple, tasty apple sundae. You may prefer to call it a deconstructed caramel apple. Either way, it’s dang delicious … and somewhat nutritious.

Tip: use apples that are in season for best results. I usually have two different types in my sundae (granny smith and pink lady, for example) for a bit of variety in texture, sweetness, and tartness. But get whatever is in season and makes your taste buds happiest.

Let’s do this!

The 4 Ingredients

apple1The following ingredients make 2-4 sundaes, depending on your serving sizes:

  • 2 apples – whatever is in season, and I generally use two different types
  • 1-2 tablespoons of good salted caramel sauce – don’t get the cheapest stuff on the shelf (trust me – a good, or great, caramel sauces makes a huge difference)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of chopped peanuts (pecans work great too!)
  • Whipped cream – to taste

As you can see in the photo, I used Smucker’s salted caramel sauce. It’s good, but not the best I’ve ever had. Stonewall Kitchen’s dark chocolate sea salt caramel (because chocolate AND caramel) is my favorite but the store was out when I made this round of apple sundaes.

This is so good it’ll make your tongue slap your forehead.

Experiment with whatever caramel sauce you want (or make your own), but definitely don’t be afraid to get a really good one. It makes a huge difference.

The Delicious Assembly Process

You’ve got the ingredients so let’s construct this tasty treat.

Step 1 – Core and chop the apples

apple3I use an apple corer/slicer first and do a quick chop. Put the chopped apples in 2-4 bowls, depending on how many you’re making. I only made two.

Step 2 – Warm up the caramel for about 10 seconds in the microwave in a separate bowl and then drizzle that tasty-goodness slowly over the chopped apples.

Step 3 – Sprinkle the chopped peanuts over the caramel covered apples. (I was too lazy to chop mine).

Step 4 – Top with whipped cream.

The only thing left to do – put this in your face.

And there you have it – super simple apple sundaes, for your eating pleasure.

No, don’t know how many calories are in this. No, I’m not saying it’s super-healthy, and nor am I saying it’s bad for you. It’s a simple, delicious, fall-time favorite treat in my house. When you follow effective, basic nutrition principles you can enjoy apple sundaes, and anything else you love, on occasion.
