If you’re worried about insurance claims or careless drivers, you’ll probably want to invest in a dash cam. Simply put. Dash cams are a great way to record any potential incidents on the road – and nowadays, they’re cheaper and more sophisticated than ever. The best dash cams record crisp video, and make it easy to share your footage to your phone, tablet or computer if you need to. But However, with so many of them on the market, it’s hard to know where to start, what to look for or what to buy. That’s why we’ve scoured through every dashboard camera and found you the five best dash cams on the market.

The best dash cams for sale 2016

1. Nextbase 512G Ultra (£180)

Nextbase offers some of the best video quality you’ll see in the dash-cam market, and the In-Car Cam 512G Ultra continues the trend. Setting up is as easy as using suction cups and plugging the Nextbase into your nearest 12V cigarette lighter but if you want a neater setup, you can get the Nextbase totally integrated for a small sum. The In-Car Cam 512G Ultra comes with a wide-angle lens so it can pick up an even greater field of view – and it also has a G-Sensor for detecting when you’ve been in an accident. The only catch? Nextbase doesn’t supply a memory card.

2. Garmin nüviCam (£255)

Garmin is already well known for its satellite-navigation systems, and the nüviCam combines that expertise with a sophisticated dashcam. The result? Less windscreen clutter, and an all-in-one solution that saves you money. The nüviCam displays a good quality image on its 6in screen, and with a rate of 1MB per minute of video recording, it will take around an hour before it starts to overwrite old files. Garmin provides a 4GB card for video recording in the box, but there’s no reason you can’t upgrade that for a significantly larger card later on.

3. Nextbase Duo (£199)

Dash cams are great for looking out the front of your car, but what happens when you want to look out the back? Nextbase has just solved that problem with the Duo – one of the most innovative cameras on the market. As with the 512G Ultra, the Duo has motion-sensing, so it will record anything that happens when your car’s parked – but it also features 720p camera quality. But the best bit? The duo uses two very different cameras for the front and rear of the device. The front camera uses a 140-degree wide-angle lens, while the rear camera uses a 50m zoom for better coverage of the rear.

4. Mio MiVue 658 (£159)

Although Mio isn’t well known in the tech industry, it’s produced one of the best dash cams we’ve used. It doesn’t look as sophisticated as the Garmin nüviCam, but the MiVue is more than up to the job. Featuring high-definition capability as well as HDR, the Mio throws in a few bonus features as well. It’s one of the first Mio cameras to come with support for a massive 128GB memory card, and it also has GPS – so it’ll notify you of upcoming speed cameras.

5. Cobra CDR 900 (£147.72)

The Cobra CDR 900 has to be one of the best dash cameras we’ve seen. Thanks to a small screen, the CDR 900 is the most compact here, but it packs more than enough features to make it one of the best. Like most dash cams, the Cobra comes with a G-sensor, so it can sense if you’re in an accident – and it also comes with an impressively sized 8GB memory card in the box. You’ll need it, because the CDR 900 is capable of recording footage in crisp HD – and an app even lets you watch it on your phone. But the best bit? The Cobra comes with an action-cam mode, and its size means you can use it just like a GoPro when you’re not driving.
