Toyota S-FR Racing Concept leaks before Tokyo Auto Salon debut

Hotter, lower S-FR customized by GAZOO Racing

A monochromatic racing version of the cute Toyota S-FR will debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon next month. The low-power, rear-wheel-drive concept was prepared by GAZOO Racing for the annual show. The Tokyo Auto Salon is sort of like our SEMA, with performance parts, race cars and customs. It’ll be on display Jan. 15-17.

The S-FR Racing Concept is a little lower, a little wider and a little longer than the basic S-FR. It could also be lighter than its non-racing sibling’s 2,160 pounds due to the use of lightweight materials.

Power figures aren’t mentioned for the concept, but rumors about the standard model said maybe a 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder or a 1.5-liter four, with output somewhere around 128 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque. We’d hoped for a few more hypothetical ponies in this concept.

With the buzz on the new Miata and the Fiat Spider, Toyota — or Scion for that matter — would be crazy not to bring it Stateside.

We’ll find out more next month during the salon.
